Aurangzeb. Rupee. Mint: Surat. AH 1080 RY 12 with RY at top left
« on: November 15, 2018, 09:48:22 AM »
This rupee was recently offered at an auction and even though the auctioneer posted this coin on Fb, not many could spot the difference in this coin and other coins of the same mint.

The auctioneer had highlighted the beautiful designs of the coin and had put a hefty price tag for that. Unfortunately, this is the normal style and it appears most collectors gave it a go by. Being a specialised collectors of coins of a few mints (including Surat), I noticed that the coin had the RY date at 11 OClock position instead of the 1 O'clock position as is standard. I checked for whatever images I could possibly find and found not one had the RY date in this position...............

Interesting  8) I've just checked my Surat Rupees but non have the RY there, another peculiarity is the word julusis at the top row instead of the usual middle which is maybe why they put the RY there also?

Interesting  8) I've just checked my Surat Rupees but non have the RY there, ......
As I mentioned I could not find a single image with the RY placed there.............and neither Jan nor Shailen could recall any........

.............another peculiarity is the word julusis at the top row instead of the usual middle which is maybe why they put the RY there also?
.
This is the standard format for Surat coins till RY 22 when the format changes to the Julus in the middle row ............ and the floral pattern goes missing...... may be the reason why no one spotted this minor anomaly.........
