New Caledonia holds independence referendum
« on: November 04, 2018, 09:32:45 AM »
New Caledonia has today held an independence referendum. The results are expected to be published at noon GMT after which President Macron is said to hold a televised address. Because of the amount of money they receive each year from Paris (1.3 billion) it is not very likely there will be a majority in favour of independence. If the majority of the people votes against independence, 2 further referendums can be held before 2022.

New Caledonia has voted against independence. With 97% of the votes now counted: 43% of the people voted in favour of independence while 57% voted against it.

If the local government wishes to do so, they are allowed to hold another independence referendum in 2020 and if that fails too, another one in 2022. The results of all 3 referendums are binding.
