Peter,
That's a very interesting subject to commemorate on a medal-coin.

Usually when people think of Romania, they think of Dracula,King Michael,Ion Antonescu,& Nicolae Ceaucescu.

Here is some more info about the piece: http://www.bnr.ro/page.aspx?prid=3327 With a mintage of 500 (yes, five hundred) it is hardly worth being discussed here ;) but unfortunately such mini-mintages are quite common for Romanian collector coins.

are to be put into circulation

Höhö. With a total mintage of five hundred pieces, proof only, each of which costs seventeen times the face value (not taking the VAT into account), those will circulate alright ...

And the latest yawner. No, wait, here's a subject that bites: Dracula! Now how did they think of Vlad the Impaler?

Peter,
Where would someone be able to buy a coin with Vlad's portrait on it like the one here?

Could be difficult - a whopping 1,000 pieces of that base metal version were issued last year. The coin commemorates the 550th anniversary of the first time that the name of Bucharest was mentioned in writing. Here is some more info about the three varieties (gold, silver, and copper/tombac) by the way:

Thanks Christian for the info and the website. I thought it was a really beautiful coin. So then you can't find one anywhere? And if you did think you could get lucky and find one, does it say on the site where to get them at?

Don't think you can order them directly at the central bank's website; and the mint's site www.monetariastatului.ro has not been updated for a long time. According to this info http://www.bnro.ro/page.aspx?prid=2726 the issue price (not including VAT) was 85 lei which is about $25. As for where to get it, hmm, I don't use eBay myself, but have you tried that? :)

Thanks for the further info Christian. Good idea. I will try ebay.
