Syria, Seleukis and Pieria. Apameia
« on: October 30, 2018, 11:33:41 PM »
Gentlemen,

Got this coin as a present. Would be great to get some historical background about it.

agoraauctions.com gave the following info: Syria, Seleukis and Pieria. Apameia. 1st century B.C. AE. Dated year 7 of the Pompeian Era (58/7 B.C).

Correct me if I am wrong, please. It is Roman Syria (Provincia Syria). Seleucia Pieria and Apamea are two cities from the Syrian tetrapolis. Obverse mentioned only one of them (ΑΠΑΜΕΩΝ THΣ IEPAΣ KAI AΣY[ΛOY]) - Apamea.

I did not find any info about local rulers (if any). Talking about Romans, then it was the Roman Republic, the First Triumvirate (Gaius Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great and Marcus Licinius Crassus).

I wonder what would be the value of this coins?

Any additional info is very welcome!

I think it is not Roman, but post-Seleucid semi-autonomous Apamea. BMC 4, Sear sg5866. Diameter should be around 18 mm.

obv: Wreathed & veiled head of Demeter
rev: ΑΠΑΜΕΩΝ THΣ IEPAΣ KAI AΣY[ΛOY ΣE], ear of grain between poppy heads, dated [QLS] (Seleucid Year 239 = 74/73 BC).

See here.

It is this coin: https://agoraauctions.com/listing/viewdetail/40199/127

Syria, Seleukis and Pieria. Apameia. 1st century B.C. AE (16,2 mm, 3,91 g, 12 h). Dated year 7 of the Pompeian Era (58/7 B.C). Veiled and wreathed head of Demeter right / ΑΠΑΜΕΩΝ THΣ IEPAΣ KAI AΣY[ΛOY], grain ear between two poppies; Z (date) to inner left. HGC 9, 1430; DCA 426.

I wonder what is the value and ruler.
