Jahangir, Rupee, Allahabad, KM# 149.8
« on: October 18, 2018, 01:12:36 PM »
Hi,
Attaching a rupee of Jahangir from Allahabad. The coin is not dated or out of flan.
This is termed as Hamisha couplet.
However I could not find the text of the couplet in Persian. The best I could find was from the LMC as in the second picture.
Can anyone please give me the Persian text in english?
Ref: KM# 149.9, LMC 976
Weight: 11.41 gm
Thanks,
Saikat

Can't help you on the text, Saikat. Sorry.

However, I am worried about the upended edge from 9 to 2 o'clock. I would not expect that on a hammered coin. I hope it's just the light playing tricks.

Peter
An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Hi Peter,
May I point you to this one in zeno https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=82221
I think this one have the similar edge. Another specimen in zeno shows a part of the border as a single line in circle.
Another thing that is interesting is why Jahangir made such a plain coin which is  rather uncharacteristic of him. Earlier he struck such beautiful rebellion rupees from the same mint.
Thanks,
Saikat

The reading in the Persian couplet you posted seems partly wrong to me, for I see no quiver.

It reads:
(Second photo, from top, partly off flan) Hamesha Noor Zar wa sikkah Allahabad
(First photo, from top) Ze name Shah Jahangir Akbar Badshah

On this photo, you can see badshah pretty clearly, with the “shah” part after “Jahangir”:

Hi Overland,
I took the reference from "Catalogue of the Coins Purchased by Punjab Govt. - Part I - Mogul Emporors Coins - by C. J. Rodgers " which clearly have incorrect reading (ref# 163).
Thank you for the text. I find this very helpful.
