Belgium honors Jacques Brel
« on: October 09, 2018, 06:53:27 PM »
In October 1978, thus 40 years ago, the Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel died, and a Belgian collector coin will now honor this artist. Silver, face value 10 euro, mintage 5000, price more than €50 ...

Here is some more info in Dutch about the issue. What is interesting is that the piece will have a song title as edge inscription: "LE PLAT PAYS * MIJN VLAKKE LAND". That ("The/My Flat Country") is one of Brel's most famous songs. Here it is, in a version with optional French subtitles. First he says a few introductory words (about 30 seconds), then comes the song.

It seems the Luc Luyckx era has now also come to an end.

Could well be so. I do not have any information about who designed this piece, but Luc Luycx was definitely not happy about the decision to close the mint in Brussels. Last year he said (to RTL.be) that he plans to continue working there until he reaches his retirement age (in for to five years) but ...

"On sera dispatché à gauche ou à droite, dans des fonctions auxquelles on n'est pas habitué, on nous mettra dans la logistique ... on va changer des ampoules, changer des robinets, qu'est-ce que vous voulez que je vous dise?"

So he expected to be in jobs where he would maybe change lightbulbs or water faucets, instead of designing coins. ::)
