Paul,
You will be very please to know that the Pobjoy Mint has now struck a commemorative $10 medal-coin commemorating the late Michael Jackson on behalf of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Aidan.

That "coin" was issued in August. Oh well, people who want such a souvenir may indeed be pleased ...

Always thought the currency of Sierra Leonne was the "Leonne" not the dollar.
In theory most NCLT has some sort of value in the local currency, but this I very much doubt does.
The worst kind of Pobjoy junk.

I always wondered the same thing when I saw 'Guitar' and 'Bike' coins of Somalia with Dollar currency instead of Shilling almost a year back.
More Info.

According to the Schön catalog, the country has "leone" coins for domestic issues and themes. Then they have dollar pieces, as "authorized issues with fictitious face values". The national bank apparently OKed them but, to make them different from actual coins, required the use of "dollar" instead of "leone".

Such dollar thingies have been issued by (or rather on behalf of) Sierra Leone since 1997. The first series was dedicated to the 50th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip: $1 Cu-Ni, $10 silver, $100 gold. When Diana died, they even issued 30 (right, thirty) different dollar pieces.
