Bactria. Demetrios I AR unit_struck copy?
« on: September 13, 2018, 06:24:29 PM »
Dear Colleagues, I know this type of Demetrios coins is widely reproduced by fake-makers, but I examined it with 10x magnifier - this coin is struck, not cast. And yet its weight 1.46 g is too high for an Attic obol and too low for any other standard.
It also looks like it was overstruck on some kind of silver coin..
Only once I came across same kind of “overweight” struck AR unit, but of Eucratides. It was roughly same weight – 1.5 g.
Did anyone come across this kind of Demetrios AR units? Mayne it is a new type of copies - struck ones?

Yes, i encountered one with this exact portrait somewhere this year. Looking in hand at the clumsy style and workmanship i discarded it as a likely fake.
Did not take photos unfortunately.

Thank you, dear Colleagues! The topic needs to me moved to "Fantasies, fakes and imitations" section..
