Abhay,

You will always find that the prices on ebay.com (the American version) are higher than ebay.in (the Indian version). However, the Indian version has very small number of coins listed.. 8)

I saw the image of Bhabha commemorative. From the image,I can definitely say that it's well struck.I can hope to get it by this weekend..

Picked up 2 more Homi Bhabha @ 20 each from Bangalore. Anna & Sister Alfonsa are much cheaper in Ahmedabad since the RBI distributed 5 coins to each interested person at the Ahmedabad coin fair.

Has govt got the date on Homi Bhabha coin wrong?
Khyati Dharamsi / DNA Thursday, March 25, 2010 0:36 IST

Mumbai: This seems to be the season of government goof-ups. First, a retired Pakistani air force officer appeared in a national ad. Then, Kolkata was dumped in the Bay of Bengal, while Delhi was sent to Pakistan in a railways map. And now, a Rs10 coin issued to mark the birth centenary of Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha has got the year wrong.

Brought into circulation a month ago, on the coin is inscribed: Homi Bhabha Centenary Year 2008-2009. But a city-based numismatist (one who studies coins), Shamji Vinchhi, says the year doesn't make sense. "Homi Bhabha was born in 1909, and died in 1966. Where does 2008 fit as the centenary year?"

He says never before has a coin mentioning a financial year been minted. Even if the financial year is taken into account, the Bhabha coin should have it as 2009-10.

Memorial coins are usually issued with the birth and death years of the individual. For instance, a coin commemorating Mahatma Gandhi had '1869-1948' inscribed on it, the one commemorating Indira Gandhi had '1917-1984' and Jawaharlal Nehru's had '1889-1964'. Another Nehru coin carried mention of the 100th
anniversary year of his birth: 1989.

An official at the Mumbai-based mint that created the Bhabha coin said a committee had suggested the date. "The details printed on the coin have been provided by the Scientific Information Resource Division (Sird) of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. We were told to print the year, and did so."

RK Sharma, an official with Sird, said: "We have been celebrating the centenary year over 2008-2009, and hence, that is the year mentioned on the coin."

Fortunately,I have reserved enough number of pieces for myself,so even if it turns out to be an error and if the coins are withdrawn,I don't need to worry ;D

Picked up 10 Homi Bhabha @ 12 each from the vendor outside the railway station in New Delhi. Looks like Noida mint. Any one can confirm if these were indeed issued by Noida mint?

I ordered my UNC set from Bombay Mint and I dont want to wait for 6 months to get a Homi Bhabha Rs 10/100 coin. >:(

I guess I'll have to find it in Ahmedabad when I visit there in next 2 months. :-\
I just wish, I get it in Baroda somehow. ::)

Dear Parth,

You can always get the UNC or Proof sets with the dealers everywhere, even in Ahmedabad. But the problem is that you will have to pay a hefty premium to these dealers.  :'(

Until and unless you are too keen to have these sets at the earliest, it is always better to get these sets from the Mint Bookings. But as you say, you don't want to wait for 6 months, then be prepared to pay a premium to these dealers.

Hi Abhay

I have booked my UNC set, but wanted the Rs 10 coin before hand then the 6 months waiting, as that may be sparingly available depending on my luck factor and price I end up with some dealer. When I had visited Ahmedabad for some work, one dealer was offering it at Rs 35. Since it was my first ever visit to a dealer, I found it illogical to pay 25 bucks extra for a circulation coin.  :o

But I guess thats how the dealers work and you have to pay extra for your desires and wants. Now I see its common to pay extra for coins and no more surprised by it. ???  :-[
Now me getting more experienced with the dealers and know what to expect and not worry for the extra moolah I need to shell out. :-\ :'(

But going to Ahmedabad is still 2 months away. :'(

Parth
