Except that he’d be facing left, not right, as tradition dictates that monarchs alternate directions.  Edward VIII went against this, but his coins weren’t seen in circulation.

That image is reversed anyway, as his hair parting is on his left.

A while ago I read that, assuming Charles is still alive when a successor to the throne is needed, he may be George VII ...

I read that too.  Something to do with King Charles being associated with a breed of dog?  Ridiculous idea, he’s been known as Charles for 70 years, why change now?

Also, his Latin name is more realistic - CAROLUS. Of course, he/the establishment in general might decide the change of monarch is the right time to ditch Latin in favour of English. But in that case the rest of the legend must also change to English.

It looks good, but to match the current tradition you need to do the following:

- flip the head so he's facing left
- change CHARLES to CAROLUS. The rest of the legend is correct.

Until I just googled it, I’d always thought the Latin of Elizabeth was Elizabetha or something like that.  As it appears that her name is the same in both Latin and English, this would indeed be a good time to ditch the Latin - at least in terms of Charles’s name.

I think I’d still prefer the rest in Latin even though it means nothing to most people.  I like the fact that the religious aspect is disguised - anything is better than “In God We Trust”...

If the legends changed to English I think they would have to change the content as well, because there would be far too much of an outcry otherwise. I have heard that Charles has in the past discussed changing the title "Defender of the Faith" to "Defender of the Faiths", plural, though even this will annoy the atheists.

On the earliest unified silver issues of the East India Company, issued under William IV, the legend reads simply "WILLIAM IIII, KING." Perhaps something equally simple is in order now, since "United Kingdom" is a bit of a mouthful.

That’s corrected the main issues with the first one.  However, he does look quite young in that portrait.  It could possibly be another ten years before he becomes King (if indeed that happens at all) when he’d be nearing 80.  The Queen is 92 now and the Queen Mother lived to be 101.  She could remain Queen (albeit in name only) right up until her death.  The death of Prince Philip might change things though (when that happens).

Portraits that flatter the monarch are nothing new of course.  It’s only from the Ian Rank-Broadley one that we’re now used to realistic portrayals.  I’m not sure I could recognise the Queen at any point from the Gillick, Machin and Maklouf portraits.  Yours is at least clearly recognisable as Charles even if he looks about 20 or 30 years younger!

This topic was locked in error by me earlier.  Apologies, I must have clicked on “lock topic” accidentally and not realised.  Now unlocked again.
