Italian Mint closed .. by the police
« on: July 14, 2018, 07:06:33 PM »
No, this is not about the Zecca dello Stato in Rome but about a private business roughly 30 kilometers south of Milan. ;)  The Italian police found an illegal mint in the town of Villanterio, Lombardy. Three men were caught "in flagrante" while making counterfeit ... 50 cent coins.

All three were apparently familiar with metallurgy and mechanics. The machine they used had a capacity of about 2,000 pieces per day. Of course making fake 50 ct pieces is less profitable than producing 1 or 2 counterfeits, but the bimetallic coins are more difficult to make.
