CZ: 100 years of the koruna
« on: July 10, 2018, 12:45:55 PM »
In 1919, Czechoslovakia introduced its own currency - the koruna (crown). In the year before, the country had become independent, and shortly afterwards it replaced the Austrian crown with a new one, for and from this new country.

That country was split up in the nazi years, then became one again, until in 1992/93 the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic went separate ways. But the koruna is still the Czech currency, and the country will celebrate that next year, also by issuing various commemorative coins and notes. Here is the program, from the central bank's Koruna Anniversary page:

* a heavyweight gold CZK 100,000,000 coin "100 years of the koruna"
* a gold CZK 10,000 coin "The 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Czechoslovak koruna"
* a commemorative bi-metal CZK 2,000 coin "The 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Czechoslovak koruna"
* a commemorative CZK 100 banknote "The establishment of the Czechoslovak koruna"
* a CZK 100 banknote with an additional print "The 100th anniversary of the currency separation"
* a commemorative silver CZK 500 coin "The 100th anniversary of the start of issuance of Czechoslovak money"
* circulating CZK 20 coins "Personalities of the Czechoslovak currency" (Alois Rašín, Vilém Pospíšil, Karel Engliš)

No further details known yet. But collectors who want to be "complete" will have to spend a lot, I think ...

Cool. :)  The links on that page even show the second and third prize winners of the design contests.

Any idea what the metals in the commemorative bi-metal CZK 2,000 coin will be?

Currently 100m korun is about 3.8m euro or 311m rupees. But I doubt that this "coin" will be issued at face. Not that it matters much ;) but it will most likely be surcharged ...

This whole anniversary thing made me curious and I found this page
http://www.cnb.cz/en/banknotes_coins/numismatics/num_mdk2016-20.html
where the anniversary coins are also mentioned.
The ''heavyweight goldcoin'' will have a weight of 100 kg and a diameter of 500 mm (= 50 cm). Currently, 100 kg is worth around 3,5 Million Euro or 4 Million US-Dollar.

A 100 kg gold coin, hm? Maybe they can give one copy as a permanent loan to a certain museum in Berlin. I heard they have the space for one ... ;D
