Indian coin - Kushan?
« on: June 25, 2018, 07:43:08 PM »
Hi :)

An Italian friend of mine needs help to identify this coin. Unfortunately he doesn't know the weight. Diameter is 22mm. Can you help him?

Thanks,
Matteo.

Yes, Kushan. My best guess is Kanishka, Eastern series (Jammu - Kashmir). See Mitchiner 3180 for the same tamgha. The reverse legend seems to be NANA, for Nanaia, the mother goddess, symbol of earth and nature. Connected to Anahita (Persia) and Venus (Hellenist). However, Nanaia is always pictured standing, facing right. The pose is much more like Mao, but I can't find an O in the legend.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
