New Commemorative Issue: 2019: 250th Session of Rajya Sabha
« on: November 11, 2019, 11:05:24 AM »
Surprise. Likely on 18th November, a commemorative coin in Rs 250 denomination and 99.9% silver will be dedicated to celebrate 250th session of Rajya Sabha. India Post will also issue a commemorative postal stamp, as it had done in 2003 during the 200th session as well.

The coin will show the Parliament building with seating arrangement of Rajya Sabha and Mahatma Gandhi's portrait. The single coin will be inscribed with 250th session of Rajya Sabha in Hindi and English along with the year 2019. Nice change from the parliament building old style design.

Hope everyone is having a good festival and holiday season.

Yes, you are right. Coin will be issued on Rajya Sabha. It is being made by Mumbai mint.

It will be of 40gm pure silver instead of 35 gm Quarternary alloy

... coin in Rs 250 denomination and 99.9% silver...

This is the key phrase. The Canadian mint at one time boasted it could refine silver to 0.999 purity. Now, India has caught up. For the record, 0.999 silver is very soft and unsuitable for circulating coins.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I'm getting mixed signals on the release date - If it's not on 18th November, it could be issued in the first week of December.

Agreed Peter. But this Rs. 250 coin will not be a circulating coin. It will be either UNC or Proof Coin, packed in a plastic capsule.
And the Mint will charge anything between Rs. 2500 to 3000 for this coin. So, no one will ever use it for Circulation with face value of Rs. 250.

Basically all such coins are Collectors coins only, meant to be put in Almirahs or at the most, in showcases.

I seriously doubt they will give a 40Gm 99.9% silver at 2500-3000! The current silver rate for 40gm is over Rs 2000 as raw material itself! The last Rs 150 Gandhi coin with same specifications came at 4300-4600 (UNC-Proof). I think even this coin will be easily offered at upwards of Rs 4000+. Even the Quaternary allow coins of 35gm (17.5gms silver) were offered at 2500-3500 where the raw material cost was hardly Rs 1000! You know well how our mints like looting we poor collectors.

Thanks
Parth

Vice President Shri Naidu informed the leaders on 17 Nov 2019 about various events planned for celebrating the landmark 250th session of Rajya Sabha beginning tomorrow. These include:

Release of a publication, titled “Rajya Sabha: The Journey since 1952” providing glimpses of various aspects of functioning of the House and it’s Hindi version;

Discussion in the House on the ‘Role of Rajya Sabha in Indian Polity: Need for Reform’ on the first working day;

Release of a commemorative volume on the evolution of Rajya Sabha and it’s functioning with 44 articles in Hindi and English by the sitting and former members and those associated with the functioning of the House;

Release of a Silver coin of Rs.250; and

Release of Postal Stamp of Rs.5.00.

The coin on Rajya Sabha released today after all. The coin shows 250 seats of the Rajya Sabha coinciding with the 250th session, Mahatma Gandhi's image on top of the parliament building - see attached image. It's among the most creative design in recent times, similar to the 75th anniversary of Netaji Bose's flag hoisting in 2018. Looking forward to seeing clearer images.
