The first Europeans who reported Siam, were the Portuguese, under the viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque
after the conquest of Malacca in 1511 there by a "kingdom Sayam" and had heard about a king of Ayutthaya.
On 24 June 1939 became the country's name at the behest of the dictator Marshal Pibun Songkhram of "Siam"
in "Thailand", as amended. The reason given was that "Siam was" indeed a name, which was only used by foreigners.
On the advice of the Kingdom of Japan needed a new identity under which all Thais should be united.
