1 cent coin, 1986.


In 1986 a full series of coins was issued featuring the portrait of the young king.

The 1 cent coin was now round and slightly smaller at 17 mm in diameter.


One version of the coin was made of bronze.

The other version was made of copper-plated steel.


These two coins were issued with the year 1986 only.

They were the final 1 cent coins that were issued with the king's young portrait.

There was now no 2 cents coin.

The final 2 cents coin had been issued in 1982.

FINAL COINS WITH THE YOUNG PORTRAIT OF THE KING.

In 1992 only, a nickel-clad steel version of the 5 cents coin was issued.

Otherwise, it retained the characteristics of the copper-nickel version of 1986.

This was the final 5 cents coin to feature the young portrait of the King.


In 1992 only, a nickel-brass-plated steel version of the 1 lilangeni coin was issued.

Otherwise, it retained the characteristics of the nickel-brass version of 1986.

This was the final 1 lilangeni coin to feature the young portrait of the King.


The 10 cents coin with the young portrait was last issued dated 1992.

The 50 cents coin with the young portrait was last issued dated 1993.

In 1995 and 1996 a new more mature portrait of the King was introduced.

Otherwise, the coin had the same characteristics as the 1986 version.

The pineapple appeared on the reverse, as usual.


The 1 cent coin bearing this portrait was issued in 1995 only.

After that, no more 1 cent coins were minted.

The 5 cents coin was now minted once more in copper-nickel.

Otherwise, it retained the same characteristics as the previous versions.

This version was minted from 1995 through to 2010.

All the coins from 1995 onwards were produced by the South African Mint.
