Finnish 5c coins dated 2001/2002 have huge mintage numbers..wonder why don't they circulate heavily..

213,666,000 (2001)
101,677,000 (2002)

(Excluding mint sets etc)..

That's because Paul hoards them all. ;D But why do you think they would not circulate? They sure do ...

Some have seen some circulation, most are very shiny and practically undamaged ...
Since in this same period I found about 10-15 other Finnish coins in circulation, there has to be a connection with the trucks  :)

Paul.

In 2017 the Irish and Portuguese central banks made a similar deal. Portugal got a bunch of Irish low denomination coins (about 123 milion 1 cent pieces, and 149 million 2 ct); guess they are no longer needed in IE due to the rounding. The Banco de Portugal shipped about 2 million 2 coins to Ireland. https://www.publico.pt/2018/05/02/economia/noticia/portugal-comprou-272-milhoes-de-moedas-de-1-e-2-centimos-a-irlanda-1815962

Interesting. I was told on this site that the "new map" 2 euros from Portugal hadn't been issued yet. Or are these "old map" coins? Anyway, I'll be looking out for them in Dublin.

There was also something going on between the Netherlands and Slovenia a few years ago but I believe it has never become clear if that was a swap or if the Netherlands just paid Slovenia to receive the leftover 5 euro cent coins of Slovenia dated 2007.

Actually that came up in a basically American forum where somebody asked about how to get rolls/bags of Irish 1 cent coins. Somebody replied, "armed" with the Publico article, that many of them can now be had in Portugal. ;)

Portugal hasn't minted their regular (standard) 2 coin for circulation since 2006 (they are in the yearly coin sets though). So, the Portugese 2 coins in this swap should be of the old design only.

(I think) same is the case with Germany and France? Also Italy?

Nah, they're there. ;)  The German mints have made the regular 2 coin for circulation in every year since 2008 - no 1 pieces though. Roughly the same in France (1: none since 2003, 2: every year since 2011); Italy made both denominations in pretty much every year. Varying mintages of course, but they are around ...
