In 1985 the Royal Canadian Mint was tasked with producing a circulation dollar coin. They had intended to make the Voyageur, a traditional canoeing scene from the standard collector dollar coin, into a circulation 11-sided coin. Unfortunately the master dies were lost in transit. Worried that they might have been stolen, the Mint opted to use an old unadopted design of a loon bird, by Robert-Ralph Carmichael. After a shaky start, the new coin came to be loved by Canadians, who nicknamed it "the loonie".

In 2017, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the loonie, the RCM minted a silver version of what the 11-sided Voyageur might have looked like.

Above you see the loonie. Which do you prefer? I've added a poll.

I think it was fate. In the end, even going by your own thematic series, having the loon and Polar Bear in continuation of the smaller denomination animal motifs make the set more cohesive

The set also includes Bluenose, the schooner, so a canoe also fitted well. However, the style of the Voyageur scene did look very old -fashioned. On the other hand, it did include a Native American, and now the Native Americans are no longer catered for on the regular coinage. Then again, there probably aren't enough of them to swing an election, so why would Trudeau care?

However, I do also much prefer the loonie as a design.

Ha-ha, well, I spoilt my own poll. I meant to run it for 10 days but instead allowed each voter 10 votes!  There are 9 votes so far, but only 5 members voted. ;D  Well, you've got to laugh. What would the world be without humour and rascals and the fish finger navy?

Well I voted all 5 options because I have mixed feelings and simply because I could ;)

So, the poll has closed, and the true results are:

The Voyageur. It has a long history behind it.
4  The loonie - it's now a modern classic.
1  I look both equally.
1  I don't much like either.

The other options got no votes.

Quazimodo admitted voting 5 times, though he prefers the loonie. He is also wanted in Canada for impersonating 5 female Eskimos during the Inuit elections.
