Frederick Mogford was born on 22 April 1933 at Murree Hills, Northern India (now Pakistan).

He was employed at the Royal Mint from October 1975 to May 1995.

Apparently Mr Mogford was more involved in the modelling than the design of coins.

He was also much more involved in designing medals during his time at the Royal Mint.

And a bit of detective work. What was the plaster Mr Mogford was preparing in the photo?

See the detail above, and the matching medal that I found on the Internet.

The medal commemorates the tercentenary of the birth of John Harrison, 1693-1776.

He was the scientist who worked on the longitude problem.

Seychelles 5 rupees 1982.jpg

Two very different designs from the same year, both by Mr Mogford.

1] Guernsey 1982 20p coin, featuring a milk can on the reverse.

2] Seychelles 1982 5 rupees, featuring a coco-de-mer palm tree on the reverse.

The homely and the exotic.

Excellent detective work. Thanks for sharing the results with us.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Glad you liked it. It's easy to overlook the human beings behind every design, who put in a lot of effort during the various stages of design and modelling, to help bring us the finished shiny round metal article.
