So far as I know, no reduced 50p was produced for St. Helena + Ascension.

Here's what was produced in 1998:-

1998. 5p.   Jonathan the giant tortoise.   Reduced size.   D: Robert Elderton.
1998. 10p.  Two dolphins.                     Reduced size.   D: Robert Elderton.
1998. 20p.  Ebony flower.                        D: Robert Elderton.

(D =  designer)

I have all their circulation coins except the recent two pound coin, which doesn't really interest me.

I have had coins from ALL the other sterling area territories, but NEVER from St. Helena + Ascension.

.....until 2003.

They also added a two-metal £2 coin in 2003.
I once received a 1984 (old size) 10p in change in the UK, in about 1990 I think.

So, did St. Helena + Ascension change the design on the reduced 50p, Andy?

Anyway, I've just emailed the St. Helena Post Office to ask them about it. I'll let you know what they say.

andyg

nope, the same design as the 1984 and 1991 issue.

Excellent stuff, Andy. I looked on ebay and the Net but couldn't find a single example of the smaller one.

Anyway, Michael Hibbit designed the original set (including turtle), whilst Robert Elderton designed the 20p and smaller 5p and 10p.

Michael Hibbit also designed the original Botswana and Kiribati sets. Robert Elderton also designed the modern Guernsey circulation set.

Whilst we are on the subject of St Helena, does anyone know if the brass £2 coin 2002 (right) was a circulation issue?  I think the 2003 issue is (left)....

Anyway, Andy, the reply that I got today from the St. Helena Post Office confirms what you told me:-

Dear Sir,

The 2003 Coin set includes £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p & 1p

Yes, the 50p has reduced in size, but still has the same design of the turtle.

The Currency Commissions has issued a coin set dated 2003 which are sold to collectors both on and off Island.  The presentation pack contains all of the St Helena coins from the 1p piece to the £2 and these have been placed in a small glossy brochure. The brochure includes photographs of St Helena and Ascension, it also contains information about the individual coins and the Island.  It is sold in a slip case and all of the coins are in bright uncirculated condition. The cost of this presentation pack of coins is £10.00 plus postage costs.

Hope this information is of some help to you.

Regards
Sara

Thanks for that.  I decided to look them up and order a set.  As there is no airport, it's pretty cool - I  have to wait until the next ship visits for the coins to be picked up.  Saying that postage was only £1.20 and the credit card fee was 66p.  So 12.86 for the set all inclusive. :)

2006 dated coins are now out, according to my source no 1p, 5p and 20p are to be issued, which I find a little odd......
