Cant id this

Hi this looks like a parthian coin
I asked the owner to remove what looks like mud to help id it but he said its not mud but rusted
Any help be appreciated.

If it is mud, you should be able to remove it with soap and lukewarm water. If that doesn't help, you can try a hot-cold treatment: cook the coin, then plunge it into chilled water (or vice versa) This should crack the mud layer, as it does not expand and contract at the same rate as the metal. Attack the cracks with a wooden toothpick and soak in soapy water again. Repeat as necessary.

If it is oxidation, a long olive oil bath is called for. This seems less likely.

If it is biological gunk, you could try capnbirdseye's caustic soda treatment (haven't tried it myself). If it is a chemical deposit, your best bet is acetone.

After all treatments except the toothpick, neutralise with running water and dry well.

I dared not clean any coins as very clumsy but the hot cold treatment does work wonders
