Missing in wildlife: Jamaica 1997 10 Dollars Manatees. I will try to get a scan from the RM Coin Club magazine.

That would be wonderful!

In 1997 Jamaica issued a collector coin, as part of its occasional "Endangered Wildlife" series, which featured a manatee (Trichechus manatus). I cannot find an image of this design. Can you help? The coin was produced by the Royal Mint (UK) and apparently was only issued in sets - which sets, I do not know.

Thank you - that's wonderful. I had never even seen an image of this design.

My thanks to forum member Big_M for providing me with evidence that Robert Elderton and other Royal Mint artists produced various designs that I shall be adding to the relevant topics.

I do not believe it is mentioned on any of the Elderton topics: 1976 Botswana Coat of Arms MODELLED by Robert Elderton.

<k>

Yes, I tend to omit the "modelled" ones, because I think, well, he didn't invent the coat of arms, now did he?

As you can see, this topic is frequently being updated, so I will think of putting the coats of arms in their own Elderton section. I believe there are more like this. Please list them here for future reference.  ;)

Robert Elderton was for a significant amount of time mentor of current coin designer Jonathan Olliffe.

I recently acquired this art medal Berry and Co, signed RCE #1. Berry and Co. is a 1921 collection of comic short stories by the English author Dornford Yates (Cecil William Mercer), his third book, featuring his recurring characters Bertram ('Berry') Pleydell, his wife and cousin Daphne Pleydell, Daphne's brother Boy Pleydell, another cousin Jonathan ('Jonah') Mansel, and Jonah's younger sister Jill Mansel. The group of five - Berry, Daphne, Boy, Jonah and Jill - are collectively 'Berry and Co. I am thinking that this piece is probably Robert Elderton as he signed his mint coins RCE. Yates died in 1960, and this would seem to be a contemporary tribute piece. The only thing that does not make sense is that since Elderton was born in 1948 then this work was done at an early age.

Nice puzzle. Note that the artist got the cigarette package right with the inner, silver-coloured sheet of paper. If memory serves (it usually doesn't) that had disappeared by 1960. Another fun detail is that the Rolls Royce has the Mercedes logo in its headlights. Really?

There is no Bill in your description, but there is one on the side of the "package". My best guess is that it refers to the second name of Cecil William Mercer, which would suggest that the artist was close enough to the author to know how the author wanted to be called. In addition to the package detail, this suggests that the medal is older than the 1960s and therefore not by Elderton. Look at the photos in reply #1 and imagine him 20 years younger.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

The Elderton wildlife thread is missing the Mauritius 1988 dodofrom the gold bullion coins (Elderton designed both obvereses and the revereses of these coins)
