Moldova - New circulating coin series
« on: February 28, 2018, 07:13:23 PM »
Moldova has today unveiled a new coin series. It consists of 4 coins. The designs on both the obverse and reverse are a jigsaw. The concept and used security features reminds me of The Royal Mint, although Moldova has never done business with that company.

The bull's head works, but I can't see the pattern with the eagle. I think Matthew Dent should be sent to prison for encouraging people to copy his silly idea.

Here is the Eagle Coat of Arms design.

Mathew Dent was earlier copied by French too but this time, it is on both sides of the coins.

Thanks, Pabitra. I see now, but I still don't think it works very well. What is the French example that you refer to?

This year has been wonderful for Moldovan numismatics: not only did they issue a new family of beautiful coins, but now there's also a circulating commemorative! Yesterday, 29.11.2018, the National Bank of Moldova issued a bimetallic 10 lei coin to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the Moldovan currency. Mintage is 250 000.

The main design feature is the Dutch lion which appeared on the lion thalers from which the Moldovan leu derives its name.

Here's a short video about the coin:

Thanks for the info, and yes, that is a piece which I may well add to my collection. :)  In case anybody wonders about the "Dutch" lion, the Dutch lion thaler (Leeuwendaalder) circulated in that area, roughly today's Romania and Moldova, in the 17th century. And the name of the currency is derived from the Romanian word (leu) for lion ...

New family was announced but only two lower denominations issued this year. 5 and 10 Lei  ( both bimetallic) are proposed to be issued in 2019 only.

I had almost sent an invoice for the use of our lion.

Ps to all central banks and mints: These kind of videos showing only details are absolutely worthless.

I fully agree, this is extremely frustrating! If you can make fancy videos like this, you should also be able to publish decent photos!

True, the higher denominations have not been released to circulation yet. The BNM has made a mint set available for collectors to order (time to order has already ended): http://bnm.md/en/content/people-wishing-buy-mint-set-containing-four-new-coins-face-value-1-2-5-and-10-lei-are

Just checked that website, and they do have, hmm, fairly good photos of that commemorative 10 lei coin (see link below). The side with the face value is not really a frontal shot, for whichever reason. But you can see the details of the "1" digit for example.
