Iran, Lion & Sun Falus of Shiraz mint, small flan
« on: February 21, 2018, 06:42:44 PM »
This has a smaller flan than usual for this type, probably Iran,  flan has rounded edge typical of hot striking

 9.45g  and 18mm

Dear Vic, the second photo looks like Falus Zarb Rasht, and the date looks like 800 AH " فلوس ضرب رشت ۸۰۰ ".
Nice coin.

Thank you Maythem, Rasht is most likely then, I had not noticed the date squeezed in but is it not 855 ?

This technique of hot striking was used in few safavids mints, specially at Kashan of which coppers have these characteristic edges.
This is a typical safavid design of AH XI or XIIth c. and I don't think that the mint could be Resht .

For me it reads "falus Shiraz" and what you read as a 800 or 850 is probaly only an ornament ? a date could be present in the loop of the sin of "falus" (xx58 or xx98  ???)

Thank you Saro, you are right, what looks like " 800 ۸۰۰ " could be an ornament.

Yes Maythem, 800 is not possible and the date is more likely 1098 AH according to similar coins (see Val. 102 - 103).
