British Pobjoy Mint has recently signed a 5-year contract to mint collectors coins for Sierra Leone. The first coin is expected to be released in January 2018. The mint already issued collectors coins for the country for decades. They minted the last coin for them in 2012. At the time they mainly minted coins depicting wildlife for the country.

After it became clear Pobjoy Mint lost the contract of the Isle of Man, the mint has this year (re)gained 3 new issuing authorities for which they can mint coins namely: Gibraltar, Fiji and Sierra Leone.

Their first coin under the new contract with the Government of Sierra Leone has a few hours ago been unveiled..  :-\ The round black and white lightning mark on the design of the coin can be scanned with a special app. During the World Money Fair of 2017, Pobjoy Mint already showed Angry Birds coins but as there was no news on these since, I thought the project had been cancelled. After scanning the mark on the coin with the app Zappar, you can see a 3D animation of the Angry Birds, view the trailer of the Angry Birds movie and take pictures with the Angry Birds.

During the same World Money Fair, Pobjoy Mint showed more fantasy coins that were never issued either. I assume these will be next..

Luckily, not denominated in Leones. Pobjoy is really looking for new markets.

..and the accompanying information.

Just as a reminder that Pobjoy Mint have - in the past - done some Leone denominated commemoratives.

Thanks Mr Paul Baker
