Elymais drachms
« on: December 27, 2017, 10:12:06 AM »
Most of these come from the large hoard of Elymais coins mentioned in the thread 'An Elymais impulse buy, I bought them in August - principally because of the haunting faces of the kings. The last one has been longer in my possession, but it comes from the same seller. They all measure about 15 mm, they look all bronze to me (no billon). The weights are mentioned in the picture titles.

I can see why they are so attractive to you. As on the coins of Chach, you found once mighty rulers, deciders over life and death, trying hard to look like Sassanian noblemen. They, as well as their realm are forgotten, except by coin collectors...

I am sure they will inspire you to save the others you showed us.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Great collection. I love the hybrid character, where i think i see both Parthian and Greek influences.
