The rule is that a US president can't appear on a coin before he is dead. There are good reasons for that. Seeing George W appear on your design reminds me of one reason: presidents can't please everybody and a number of presidents didn't even finish the job with an approval rating of at least 50%. I am one of those who would not have approved of Bush Jr.'s performance had I been asked. My disapproval distracts from the appreciation of the design - you did pick a nice portrait - and even more from the intention of the series: education.

It should be 41st President and not 41th.
Just a small correction

Stopped at Reagan...order them from the US mint before 12/31/17.  Order soon or they won't be available after that.  My understanding is that no items minted 2017 or before will be available come 2018.  I just got a roll each of the Code Talkers and Sequoyah dollar coins and all five of the 2017 America the beautiful "S" quarters.

I do not believe the presidential dollar coins will pick back up if any of the living presidents die. ???

Regards,

KK

Good question. :) I thought the law (source) was pretty clear about this:

"No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President."
"The coins issued under this subsection commemorating Presidents of the United States shall be issued in the order of the period of service of each President, beginning with President George Washington."
"The issuance of coins under this subsection shall terminate when each President has been so honored, subject to paragraph (2)(E), and may not be resumed except by an Act of Congress."

So when the series reached Gerald Ford, that should have been it. But apparently "order ... of each president" does allow presidents who are still alive to simply be left out in order to honor the next one.

Not that we will ever see those latest presidential dollars ;) but as ideas (of what they would perhaps look like) they are fine. That is, with Obama the middle initial would probably be left out. And his portrait ... yes, he sometimes holds or moves his chin up that way, but especially the combination with the profile I do not find very appealing.
