by an expert colleague:

actually the 'broken' plural of ūqiya is awāqi(n), not just awāq.  however the 'whole' or 'intact' plural ūqiyāt is also admissible but scarcely usable for this very word.

Does anybody know of which species the fish is, and also the names of the musical instruments?

A new coin with a face value of "2 Ouguiya" has been added to complete the new series.

thanks for info , jostein !!

Nice design !

Interesting and unexpected. It appears the 1 Ouguiya coin is much harder to counterfeit than the 2 Ouguiya coin.  ::)

Very good news.
Thanks Jostein.

Why did they skip 2 Ougiya coin when designing a new series?

Which mint has minted this coin, Jostein? Paris or Kremnica?

At the end of December 2021, Mauritania introduced a 20 Ouguiya banknote. For the time being, it will circulate alongside the trimetallic 20 Ouguiya coin that was first introduced in 2018, but it certainly seems that the latter was not a success.

Aside from that, 4 years after the introduction of the coin series there is still no official detailed information on what is actually depicted on the coins. Over the years I have done endless efforts to get the information either from Monnaie de Paris or the Mauritanian government, but neither are cooperative. It is truly unbelievable and unprecedented.
