A possible hoard of countermarked Achaemenid sigloi
« on: December 01, 2017, 03:04:46 PM »
In these days three sellers are selling several Achaemenid sigloi with interesting countermarks. These countermarks are very rare.
In my opinion it could be an hoard: from where?

I have 14 images. I'm going to post them in the following posts.

Probably an ordinary countermark not related to other coins?

Time of Darios I to Atraxerxes III (Circa 485-340 BC)
5.31g. - 15mm.
Obv: Persian king in kneeling-running stance right, holding spear (or dagger) and bow.
Rev: Rectangular incuse punch.
Cf. Carradice Types II-IV.
The goat is reminiscent of those found on the coinage of Kelenderis, while the monogram is very similar to some of the uncertain coinage of Asia Minor (cf. Gitbud & Naumann 37, lot 151).
