France 2018: Simone Veil
« on: November 13, 2017, 10:12:53 AM »
According to a Spanish website France is in 2018 going to issue a 2 euro commemorative coin for politician and lawyer Simone Veil (1927-2017). From 1979 up until 1982 she was president of the European Parliament. There is no specific anniversary of her next year so the coin will likely only be issued to honor her.

Earlier France was planning to issue a 2 euro commemorative coin for the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. That coin has allegedly been replaced by this new theme. More on that here.

The Simone Veil coin was issued in late June, with a mintage of 10 million. The obverse depicts her portrait, with the number she got in Auschwitz (see below) and, in the background, the circle of seats in the European Parliament.

Simone Veil was born in July 1927 and died in June 2017. So why does this coin come this year? Because she was solemnly buried at the Panthéon in Paris, along with her husband Antoine, on 1 July 2018.

She was Jewish, deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration or extermination camp but survived the Holocaust. Later she became a French and European politician, and between 1979 and 1982 she was President of the EP. So these two aspects are reflected by the design ...
