The curse of the elephant is the ivory trade. It regularly threatens to wipe out one of the earth's signature animals. Ivory has been used as money, as shown by this banknote.

I actually owned a small piece of ivory one time. It was in the form of a 12 inch folding ruler from the 1890's.
Sold it on ebay years ago for about $90. I should have kept it but that is the usual story of something I sell.
