ID help - Arab-Sassanian AE Pashiz, Khusro II type
« on: November 03, 2017, 06:19:03 PM »
Got this one in a job lot recently, and not really sure where to start working towards an ID. I'm bad with Arabic and Pahlavi, which seem to be the only way to really ID these things.

Umayyad Caliphate
Pre-reform "Arab-Sassanian" Pashiz
30mm / 1.97g
Bust of Khusro II, Pahlavi legends before
Fire altar with attendants; can't make out mint or year

Any help is appreciated!  ;D

Difficult to say whether this is indeed an Arab-Sasanian type. There is no trace of an Arabic legend which could provide a clue to further attribution i fear.

There is some Pehlevi lettering, does that help? And are you sure about the metal? That size and that design point to a silver drachm. However, the weight...
The crown looks Xusro’s, but the profile’s more like Yazdgard III.
At first sight, I don’t see it in Gyselen’s Arab Sasanian Copper Coinage.

Thanks for the comments.

This was a fun lot of highly unusual coins; only a few had a clear-cut attribution.
