UK Commemorative themes for 2018
« on: October 28, 2017, 07:08:02 PM »
The issuance program of 2018 is now for some time in my possession. Good friends (very few on this website these days) have already been allowed to have a look at it. There will be 6 commemorative 2 pounds coins and 6 commemorative 50p coins.

4 of the commemorative 50p coins will commemorate Beatrix Potter. These coins will again depict several characters, one of which will again be Peter Rabbit. Furthermore 1 of the 2 pounds coins will commemorate the First World War. More information can not yet be released as there is still an embargo on the program.

It is going to be a very special mint year

There will be 6 commemorative 2 pounds coins and 6 commemorative 50p coins.

The UK will be leaving the EU but the issuing program is very similar to many Eurozone countries (and others around the world): Too many coins per year.
Example: The ''two €2 commemorative coins per country and year'' has ruined this field for many collectors. But this is a subject for another thread.

What's the Royal Mint's obsession with Beatrix Potter?

One of the £2 will most likely commemorate the end of WWI (Armistice).  ;)

When will the embargo end?

The Beatrix Potter has been a good money spinner for the Royal Mint....they been selling out of the not for circulation sets for each one so far.

When will the embargo end?

Nobody knows, the information was shared to an acquiantance by an employee of The Royal Mint. This employee also gave my acquiantance permission to share it, which she did. Few days later there was a digital raid of Royal Mint staff on several websites demanding the information to be deleted.

I only shared the information with my good friends between the day of the permission of The Royal Mint employee and the day on which it became clear the permission was not legitimate.

Chards speculate on the 2018 anniversaries that might be being marked by commemorative coins.  It’s November now so we’ll know soon enough.

My immediate thought there is the obvious - James Bond - but surely not?  The next Bond film (the 25th) won’t be released until November 2019, and there are no significant anniversaries of either the first book or the first film.

However, the other significant Bond - Michael Bond - issued the first Paddington Bear book in 1958 so there’s an anniversary there.  Numerous Beatrix Potter 50p coins but apparently Paddington is only worthy of a 10p?

The price of it (£60) is consistent with what you’d expect a silver version of the circulation specification 10p (6.5 grams) to sell for these days though.

Thought the same.

A commemorative 10p coin? Don't think so. Likely a normal silver 10p in some kind of packaging related to the anniversary.

A normal 10p coin in silver wouldn’t make much sense though, particularly as the standard design is part of that Dent jigsaw.  It would be a bit of an insult really.  I think Paddington should warrant at least one 50p coin.

Was there a Paddington story involving a two-shilling or 10p piece?  Trying to work out the reasoning for it.

There’s a customer review for a Paddington book on Amazon:
“Paddington is great. I'm 56 but still love reading the ORIGINAL stories (can't quite get used to reading 10p instead of two shillings, though!)”

That's what I call an ''excessive release program.''

Furthermore a 100th anniversary of the People's Act 50p coin in 2018.

The Representation of the People Act 1918 I presume - the act that took the first step towards giving women the same voting rights as men.

I agree that the issue plan as outlined by eurocoin is somewhat excessive. But equally I don't think there should be a blanket numerical limit on commemoratives as imposed by the ECB on euro issuers. 2018 is a year of significant anniversaries. The RotP Act, the end of WW1 and the foundation of the RAF are all worthy subjects, I think. But just the one coin per event will do.
