Oops, sorry. I have now corrected the mistake. I meant it is available from 00:01 on Monday 5th. The coin will later that same day also be available at the crown post offices.

Ok I thought that was the case! I'll make sure I'm on there at midnight to order mine! Do you know how many they'll mint? And are they £60! Cheers.

The Royal Mint will produce a total of 20,000 silver proof Snowman 50p coins. 15,000 of them will be released in the perspex block that can be seen in the images that I posted. I do not know in which packaging the other 5,000 Proof coins will be issued. I attach a copy of the certificate of authenticity of the silver proof coin in perspex block to this message:

Yes it will be very popular. I expect a lot of problems with the mint's website. I just asked my contact who informed me that the silver proof coins in perspex block will be available for 60 pounds.

In addition to that I am now being told that the other 5,000 silver proof Snowman 50p coins will be issued in a black box for 85 pounds each. I don't know where and when the coins in the black boxes will be available.

So 20,000 silver proofs in total, 15,000 in perspex block and 5,000 in black box.

The Snowman 50p coin will not be released into general circulation.

Interesting that the Royal Mint has stated that The Snowman coin will not go into circulation. Is this a marketing ploy to stimulate increased interest?

<k>

For months now I have never received any commemorative coin in circulation. I used to receive such coins in abundance, now I only see the standard designs. What has happened? Has anybody else experienced the same thing?
Visit the website of The Royal Mint Museum.

Likewise no alphabet 10p's to be found in change.

Last years Potters designs are so common that I'm spending them now,
this years all four have been around since mid to end October but not in large quantities as yet.
always willing to trade modern UK coins for modern coins from elsewhere....

The reason Change Checker is giving is:

"...unfortunately due to the seasonal nature of the coin and insufficient demand from banks and cash centres, The Royal Mint have confirmed that the Snowman 50p will not enter circulation."

I'm actually glad that some of these commemoratives aren't entering circulation.  At least then it's a level playing field.  Had they issued them, they'd be snapped up and all over eBay in no time.  I can get my no-frills card with the (non-coloured) coin from Westminster/Change Checker and be done with it.

I see some of last year's Beatrix Potter coins now and again, all of which I've saved, but likewise I don't see many commemoratives these days.  I don't really expect to anymore.  As I say, I'm happy with my cards from Westminster.  Quite glad I don't bother with Royal Mint packs with their over-the-top folders and inflated prices.

For anyone who missed out of the silver proof Snowman. The Royal Mint has bought back 4,000 pieces from luxury brand John Lewis. These pieces do not come in the same packaging though. The Mint only sells them on the phone for 85 pounds including postage.

Furthermore for people who are looking for the coin itsself, there will also still be a limited amount released in black boxes through the post offices. These will cost 85 pounds too.

From November 19, the Nutcracker 5 pounds coin will be the Strike Your Own coin at the Royal Mint Experience.

There have been found several misprints of the Silver proof Snowman 50p coin where the print is rotated and so does not lay on top of the minted relief. This also causes a different allignment to the obverse.
