Wildebeest. 2 cents, 1965 to 1990.

Promoted to the 5 rand coin, 1990 to 2003.

2004 onward. Promoted to be bimetallic.  Is that down to merit, or did it threaten to headbutt people?

Coat of arms, 1 rand, one year type of 1969.

Coat of arms, cent, 1970.

The same coat of arms on the obverse of a 2 rand coin of 1989.

Here you see "Suid-Afrika" at left.

Jan van Riebeeck appeared on the obverse of the coinage from 1961 to 1964.

A different portrait of him appeared on the obverse of the next design series, from 1965 to 1969.

From 1970, either the coat of arms or a portrait of one of the various presidents appeared instead.

Notice the different shapes and sizes of the small rosettes that are used as separators around the rim of the coin. They appear on the coins from 1923 to 1964. Sometimes mere diamonds are used instead.
