The annual meeting of the Oriental Numismatic Society in the Netherlands, will be held on Saturday 21 October 2017 at the premises of the Leiden University, Cleverdingaplaats 1 at Leiden. Members of continental Europe are separately informed with the latest Journal #230.
For all others and for those who didn’t receive the program of the meeting, it can be found at the ONS-website http://www.onsnumis.org/leiden2017.shtml
Some of the topics of the meeting will be on the Monetising the Egyptian countryside in the third century BC by Hans van der Valk, Karan Singh will give a presentation on The Legends on Yaudheya Coins, and Kris Van den Cruyce about The Tibetan Coinage. Patrick Pasmans will surprise us with the less known subject of Russian Zmeevik medallions.
As usual there will also be room for questions, news items, etc. Members are invited to come forward with it. Traditionally, at the end of the meeting a small auction of Oriental coins and related books will be held. The proceeds of this auction is a welcome addition to the ONS-funds. For the auction list see: http://onsnumis.org/auctions/auct2017.pdf
All the lots of this auction has been uploaded at the ZENO.RU Oriental Coins Database. https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=14139
Absentee bids for this auction are welcome and need to be sent, either by post or e-mail to the Regional Secretary Europe. Sent to e-mail: lingen@wxs.nl
People who want to attend the meeting are requested to inform the Regional Secretary Europe, lingen@wxs.nl at the latest before the 18th of October 2017.

I will attend the meeting - for the first time. If anybody wants to see coins from my collection, send me a message. I think I will bring the book Barbarian Coins on the Territory Between the Balkans and Central Asia by Andrei Sergeev to show, because I like it very much. See here. Great to be meeting you!

And a very nice meeting it was, with about 35 people from all over Europe. I was most touched by the tale about Tibet coinage by Kris van den Cruyce. There also was a nice auction with fierce competing, I won only one coin, an earliest for my small Tahirid collection. Here it is, a dirham minted in Herat by Tahir bin al-Husayn in revolution, mentioning governor al-Shukr bin Ibrahim, dated AH 206 = AD 821-22.
The best thing was meeting many nice people whom I hope to keep contact with in the future.

Thanks Paul for your appreciation of the day. It was indeed a great succes and the largest gathering as I can remember. A stimulans for next year.

Indeed, 35 people is something to be proud of. I hope they have seen something of Leiden also, the city of Rembrandt and the meeting place of the pilgrim fathers. Maybe some year we can combine the ONS meeting and the WoC meeting?

I was a postal bidder on one coin. No news yet on whether I won it.

Peter
An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

That would be only logical, combining the two (although there are other than Oriental collectors in WoC). As for me, WoC does as much for numismatic enthousiasm as does the ONS.

At the auction, a few coins were won by postal bidders, but I don't know which ones.
