Honduras: Possible introduction of 3 new coins
« on: September 30, 2017, 08:03:52 PM »
During the last few months the Central Bank of Honduras has researched the possibility to change the 1,2 and 5 Lempira notes into coins. The results of this research will be released in October.

Although coins are currently not very popular in the country, such introduction would mean huge cuts in costs. Notes only circulate for less than 2 years after which they have to be replaced while coins can remain in circulation for 20 years.

Alongside the introduction of the new 1, 2 and 5 lempiras coins, it seems that new centavos coins can be introduced, anyway, they do not specified what values (In my opinion, no values under 20 centavos will be issued):

The Banco Central de Honduras will unveiled the results of the study by the end of October with the final decision, but everybody there know that the study will approve the minting of those new coins.

1 Lempira is currently around to 4 euro cents.

After several decades Honduras has changed mints and instead of the Royal Canadian Mint, now the Royal Dutch Mint works with them. They are currently producing coins for them. If there will be any new denominations I do not know.

Several years back, Honduras had indicated that 1 Lempira with Nickel plated steel 10 grams 30mm will be introduced. Now if 1 Lempira is being issued along with 3 and 5  Lempiras, then obviously the specifications will change.

No updates for quite some time.
Royal Dutch mint has plenty of free time these days.

I do not think the order would have been so large for Dutch mint that it may take 6 months.
Honduras has rather small population.

Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) could Replace one and two Lempiras Bills with Coins.

24 September 2019

The Central Bank of Honduras is mulling about the possibility of replacing the one and two Lempiras bills with coins. These coins are usually made of zinc and copper alloys for durability and to reduce manufacturing costs.

Researchers concluded that a banknote lasts an average of 2.5 years, while coins have a life of 12 to 15 years. Honduras’ national currency is minted in England, France, and the Netherlands through international public tenders.

The minting of the 50 centavos coin currently costs 65 centavos.

So, Royal Dutch mint was not minting any coins for them in January this year.

Tenders were floated this year in July only.

The last date was in beginning of August.
So, hopefully they are being finalised now.

Royal Dutch Mint was in January of this year producing coins for Honduras. They were producing 20 centavos coins and possibly also other denominations. Have a look at this video to see the coins being packaged. In the video you can also see what a proper mint looks like. I hope it won't be too much of a shock for you.

Also see this report of a quality inspection conducted by the Central Bank of Honduras. Royal Dutch Mint apparently has received orders for the production of 20 and 50 centavos coins and these coins are being dated 2016 (despite being produced in 2018 and 2019).

The governor of the Central Bank of Honduras has denied media reports that the central bank is considering to change 2 banknotes into coins.
