Yes, quite a few collectors have already complained about the recent plethora of such notes. Lots of issues on fairly "irrelevant" occasions, and several with places outside the currency union ...

Then again I must admit that this past weekend I spent €4 on those. And why? At the World Money Fair they had a booth with four "printing" machines - actually dispensers only. Plus, Richard Faille was there. I took a photo of him, and got two autographs. :)

I briefly told him that I like the concept, and the quality of the "notes", but that in my opinion it is getting too much. Well, he has a point when he said that, like coin collectors, the people who are after these should focus on a geographical area, or a theme, instead of trying to have 'em all. Still, issuing so many could be counterproductive.

Collectors!

[RANT] No museum would even dream of a "complete" Rembrandt collection. No collector of porcelain would strive for anything "complete". Can you even imagine a "complete" collection of furniture? How interesting is a complete collection of all the photos you took in your life?

What is the added value of "complete"? Is it about having fun, collecting what you like, entertaining visitors and educating yourself? Or is it about the √s in a catalogue that was incomplete before it was printed in spite of the included little bit of paper with errata?

Here we have a collection of pictorial, slightly mono-colour prints with two major characteristics: cheap, and resembling a banknote (while acknowledging it isn't with zeroes). They have minimal artistic and historical value, but they have no false pretence, entertain and amuse. That's more than can be said of my "complete" photo collection. [/RANT]

What bugs some or several (don't know) "zero euro note" collectors is that these days such issues are made for all kinds of places. There is one about the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach (USA), several with Chinese designs (from Mao Zedong to a panda) ... or this one "from" Gori, Georgia.

Granted, Faille had the idea that people would buy one of those at the site or event it depicts, much like the touristic jetons he had done before. (Or think of those squished pennies aka elongated coins that you can get at various sites.) True, nobody needs a complete collection of those. And yet it may get out of hand ...

green 0 euro notes have been made by the dutch company euroscope.
they call them memoeuro.

Figleaf

I may be over-sensitive, but I sense a significant difference between the Faille notes and the Euroscope notes. They Faille notes are to the Euroscope notes what not-for-payment tokens are to advertising tokens. Or maybe it's hard to judge them on just one picture and they are more "whatever people will buy" on other notes?

Here is a new "Irish note". One that I would have bought had it been available at the time when we had our WoC meeting in Dublin last year. ;)

Christian

Figleaf

So would I! I very much like Dublin and had a wonderful time with WoC members there.

My eyes go immediately to GPO Post Office in the centre of the note - it now says "General Post Office Post Office"
Malcolm
Have a look at  my tokens and my banknotes.

chrisild

Yeah, two brackets - "GPO (Post Office)" - would have made sense.  ;D  Still a nice mix of Dublin sites.

Actually I would have tried to be consistent. I can't see a label in the French one clarifying that's the "Eiffel Tower (tower)".  ;)
If you came to Dublin and you don't know that's Molly Malone, probably you shouldn't have spent that much time in the Guinness Storehouse shop.
Anyway I'll open my eyes and see where they are distributing it around here, other than the online shop.
Thanks for sharing.

Figleaf

Hey, I spent a very considerable time in the Guinness storehouse as well as the Jameson brewery and if I wouldn't have known the Molly Malone song, I would have learned it there. :D

Thanks for the offer. I am definitely interested. 8)
