Zands, Karim Khan, 1178 AH, AR abbasi, Tiflis (Tbilisi now located in Georgia) mint (1172-1193 AH)(1753-1779 AD)
Weight 3.82 gm
Diameter 20-21 mm
Metal Silver
Obverse: Shiite formula (Kalima) "لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله علی ولی الله”, La illah l’Allah Muhammad Rasul Allah, ‘Ali Wali Allah, meaning, “no God but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God, ‘Ali is the chosen one of God”.
Reverse: “یا کریم “, Ya Karim “O Gracious One” (invoking an epithet of God, but alluding to Karim Khan) followed by mint & date " ضرب تفلیس  “, struck in Tiflis. Date “ 1178 ۱۱۷۸ ” is above letter “ B ب ” of the word “zarb ضرب”.
Nice coin, very rare mint. The coin weight is slightly below standard.

Tbilisi is another example of a mint in uncertain territory, inhabited by people with another culture and religion and even script and too close for comfort to czarist Russia. I can well imagine how few coins were struck there. Congratulations that you have found such a piece of history.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
