Australia New $2 Commemorative: Invictus Games
« on: July 24, 2018, 04:43:40 PM »
New $2 coin released for Invictus Games

A new $2 coin featuring a wheelchair competitor will be unveiled in honour of the Invictus Games.

The Royal Australian Mint will release the currency in Sydney today, where people will be able to swap old coins for the latest edition before they go into circulation.

It is expected 2.3 million of the coins will be rolled out across the nation before the Games, inspired by Prince Harry, kick off in Sydney on October 20.

“Coins have the ability to reach many people, and in this instance, help to share the Invictus Games spirit and spread the word on the healing power of sport across Australia,” said Ross MacDiarmid, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Australian Mint.

“This new $2 coin, designed by one of the Mint’s own coin designers, represents triumph over adversity and will be a tangible reminder of the courage of all Invictus Games Sydney 2018 competitors beyond the Games in October this year.”

The Mint is also producing medals for the Games and will release a series of commemorative products leading up to the event.

More than 500 competitors will compete across 11 sports in the Invictus Games later this year, which is the only international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women.
