Somalia plantation token?
« on: August 30, 2009, 11:42:29 AM »
The following token is a "problem" to me. It is stamped on a piece of 5 Centesimi of 1960. The face value was doubled with the c/m "10 C".

But what is the c/m "VEM" standing for?

I have no idea but some, which lead to nothing ...

Thanks, Afrasi

I guess you had already figured out that the lower line is probably the family name Somoça (Somoza in Spanish), which makes it likely (but not sure) that VEM is either a Portuguese word or initials of a person or a company. If it is the latter, the M may stand for Moçambique. Maybe our Portuguese friends can shed further light on this.

Thanks!

But I don't think so. To change the word SOMALIA to SOMOCA you don't have to place the 1 there, to place O C over ALI would be enough.

I never saw anything like this before.....
The name Somoca or somoça is not Portoguese . Somoza is indeed a spanish name but I can not see any Portuguese connection.

I'll show the picture to some persons I know but I have little hope to solve the mistery.

Greetings

Thanks for looking!

So I have to guess again with my wildest phantasies ... perhaps something like that:
