Hey hey hey... guys STOPPPP. Anna coin may not be limited to just 5 rupees. On closer inspection of the photograph of Mr Karunanidhi, the coin appears to be much larger in size. I think there might be two coin (Rs 5  + Rs 100). Kolkata has issued IAF coins in similar cases. They also contained two coins. We may be lucky if my hunch (or guess) regarding Rs 100 coin is correct...

Got a few pieces today, all are struck at Mumbai mint.It has been struck very nicely (again) :) I was first informed that it has been issued by Calcutta mint. Can anyone confirm its existence?

Figleaf

I have tried to come up with a picture that inspired the design, but couldn't. He apparently had the short brushy mustache at a later age and the wavy hair when he had a longer, shorter mustache...

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

dont be sorry aditya... my aim of asking you is again to wait for a few more months or maybe a year and hopefully i can find this in circulation

mumbapuri

got a nice surprise... the perarignar anna cent 5rs is now available in circulation... found one for myself... will try to upload the pic :)... a nice surprise since i am still to get the sister alphonsa coin...

Bimat

You are really lucky, mumba. :) Considering that the coin was released for circulation just a couple of weeks ago, this is a bonus acquisition.Dealers are already asking 50 bucks (or even 3 digit amount) for it,so you have saved at-least 50 Rs ;)

Aditya, its the way you look at it :)... yes i agree i am lucky to get the coin this early but my msg here to my fellow collectors is simple, please dont spend your hard earned money on this coin, it will be in circulation, hence wait for it.

MS

Great find indeed Mumba. Congrats!!! Hope to see this coin at my coin club soon. They generally give out coins at face value but 2-3 months after the coins are released. I suspect that being office bearers and dealers at the same time is a conflict of interest  ;D

Nice picture too! I will update the commemorative topic with your picture. Its a much better one.

I hate when these political leaders come in the coins. Not many know any details about his policies, and need for a separate country. Not that Wiki is the reference guide, but check this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._N._Annadurai#Dravida_Nadu

"During his days in Dravida Kazhagam, Annadurai had supported Periyar's call for an independent Dravida Nadu. The claim for such an independent state stayed alive in the initial days of DMK."

And now the Indian Govt issues a coin for him, hmm.

MS

Well, the DMK is a coalition partner in the central government and thats why a coin for Annadurai has been released. In a multi-party country like ours,       everyone's whims and fancies are catered for.

On the issue of a separate Tamil land, the movement in the 50s was to have a Tamil country encompassing the Tamil provinces of Sri Lanka and the south India. The Indo-China war in 1962 changed that quickly, and to the credit of the Tamil, their independent movement was abandoned during that time and never picked up again.

Bimat

Political parties always try to implement their political agenda through all possible ways, issuing a commemorative coin is one of them ;)
