Jersey: Liberation Anniversary 1985
« on: May 04, 2017, 02:27:02 PM »
In 1985 Jersey celebrated its 40th anniversary of liberation from the Nazis. Initially John Savage produced two designs of the Vega. You can see his initials to the left of the ship. They were not accepted, but no reason was given for this.

Robert Elderton produced this design, but Jersey said there had been few children on the island by the end of the war, and the design did not suitably reflect the hardship the islanders had endured.

He then produced two designs of the HMS Beagle instead. The lower image, below, shows the final design.

It is pretty inconsistent to complain that a design doesn't reflect the suffering of the Channel Islands and to prefer one of the escort destroyer that received the nazi surrender over a Red Cross steamer that provided medical aid, relief (and cigarettes!) to the suffering islands in December 1944.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
