Proposed designs by John Savage.

In 1985 Jersey celebrated its 40th anniversary of liberation from the Nazis.

Initially John Savage produced two designs of the Vega.

You can see his initials to the left of the ship.

They were not accepted, but no reason was given for this.

Proposed design by Robert Elderton.

Robert Elderton produced this design.

However, Jersey said there were few children on the island by the end of the war.

Also, the design did not suitably reflect the hardship the islanders had endured.

He then produced two designs of the HMS Beagle instead.

It is pretty inconsistent to complain that a design doesn't reflect the suffering of the Channel Islands and to prefer one of the escort destroyer that received the nazi surrender over a Red Cross steamer that provided medical aid, relief (and cigarettes!) to the suffering islands in December 1944.

Some sketches regarding the 1985 50 pence commemorative.

I do not know why the flag ropes were ultimately omitted.
