Weight=2.3 g, Diameter=17.5 mm

The sun hid behind the clouds as the second image was being taken, hence the variation in colour.

Obverse: ELIZABETH D G ANG FR ET HI REGINA, crowned bust left with rose behind and 'pheon' mintmark


Reverse: POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV, long cross over arms dividing legend.

Better than usual, but the head has still been reduced to a silhouet. These coins must have circulated for a very long time. Elizabeth was popular and her coins were a vast improvement over the always worsening standards of Henry VIII, but there is no lack of English Stuart coins either.

The rose behind the head is not a reflection of the queen's love of flowers but a heraldic device to distinguish the sixpence from the fourpence, similar in size but without the rose.
