I have heard it too, and it's almost "confirmed" if sources are to be believed. ;)

Ideally, it should be there as (mathematically speaking) ratio of two nearest denominations should never exceed 2.5 in order to have smooth transactions. Currently, for ₹100 and ₹500, the ratio is 5 and for ₹500 and ₹2000, the ratio is 4. So the ₹200 note would make our system a bit better.

The most accepted "ideal" series is 1-2-5, i.e. 1-2-5-10-20-50-100-200-500-1000-2000-5000 etc. For high inflation economies, the better solution is 1-5. Many series will in practice hover between the two and some 2.5 values can be found for historical reasons. By that standard, the lack of a ₹200 note is not disturbing, but a missing ₹1000 note is more serious.

That's true! However, the high value cash transactions have become easier due to ₹2000 banknote. ;)

Ideally, government shouldn't have issued the ₹2000 banknote but a ₹200 one (so making the ₹500 note highest denomination). But then, that would have delayed the re-monetization process by years. So to minimize that period of re-monetization, they even skipped the ₹1000 note...Even today, when some 70% re-monetzation process is complete according to RBI, majority of it is in the form of ₹2000 notes, however the crunch of ₹500 notes has reduced significantly.

RBI mum on new Rs 200 notes likely to be released after Centre's notification

Virendrasingh Ghunawat  | Edited by Nivedita Dash
Mumbai, April 3, 2017 | UPDATED 00:46 IST

After successfully launching Rs 2000 and Rs 1000 notes in the market, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is reportedly planning another new currency denomination note. If sources are to be believed, the Reserve Bank of India is planning to print new Rs 200 banknotes.

"Rs 200 currency note is in the pipeline. But, unless it is notified by the central government, making a dye (block), working on security features and printing process of Rs 200 would not take place. So this time, RBI would implement its plan only after the Centre's notification," a source told IndiaToday.in.

"Like Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50 and Rs 100, the RBI is planning to bring, Rs 100, Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 1000 in future," added the source.

A similar report, published by Live Mint, said that RBI Board has already cleared a proposal to introduce banknotes of Rs 200 denomination.

However, when the RBI Publicity department was contacted, it said, "As of now, it is a speculative information. Thus, it would be difficult for us to make any statement on it."

News that the government will bring back currency note of Rs 1,000 denomination in a new avatar soon has also been doing the rounds.

THE DEMONETISATION

On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised the nation by announcing a demonetisation drive with a promise to curb black money and fake notes by declaring the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes as invalid with immediate effect.

A new design of Rs 500 notes were introduced while Rs 2,000 currency notes were introduced for the first time.

Although it is yet to be confirmed officially, there has been talks of withdrawing the Rs 2,000 notes.

RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy had told India Today that the new 2,000-rupee notes would be phased out gradually in the years to come.

Image of Rs 200 currency note goes viral on social media; debate rages over fake or real status

By: FE Online | Updated: April 6, 2017 4:56 PM

With reports of government planning to introduce new denomination currency notes of Rs 200 circulating widely, an image of what is purported to be an actual one has gone viral on the social media. The chances are high that this is a fake image created by someone and if it is so, it is a good example of Photoshop job, as the currency contains all the features that the new currency notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 contain. From the watermark to other security features, the image mirrors them all. Besides, it does have a different colour from those of the new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 banknotes issued after demonetisation on November 8, last year. The note also mentioned Rs 200 in English and Devnagari font along with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the signature of RBI governor. Authorities have failed to react to these rumours. In fact, no official confirmation on the matter has come from either the government or the RBI.

Earlier, reports had indicated RBI may introduce a note of this denomination, LiveMint had reported. It is now waiting to get clearance from the Centre, as printing of the note can be started only after the government clears the proposal. But with this, the image of notes appeared on the Internet. Having all features like a real currency, the image was shared a few days ago and since then it has been circulating widely among social media users.

Central bank’s stand is that it wants to encourage cashless transactions, and not currency notes, as they are more helpful to the people. The new currency notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 were issued after government banned the Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes in order to combat black money, corruption and fake currency along with encouraging the cashless economy.

Clearly Photoshoped. The creative artist forgot the two points that I have marked. The Arrow shows clearly three Zeros after the two and the circled part sees to read thousand and not hundred.

I also received a green coloured note image.

According to some reports, the planned ₹200 banknotes will be put into circulation only through banks and not through ATMs, as ATMs will again have to be re-calibrated for the new denomination and size. It's an expensive and time consuming exercise. Interesting to note that public sector banks are yet to pay companies which maintain ATMs for their job during demonetization process...

While we are yet to hear from RBI regarding the new ₹200 note, RBI will soon release ₹20 and ₹50 banknotes of 2005 Gandhi series. These banknotes will be dated 2016 and will have signature Dr. Urjit Patel.
