Union Bus Service - South Africa?
« on: March 19, 2017, 12:29:21 PM »
We think (that is Art, Mal and myself) that this might be from South Africa - does anyone have any documentation on it?

Mal found a reference to a Union Bus Services in South Africa but that's all we have.

My search lead me to Jammu and Kashmir in India and also to Kenya. But to be sure I sent additionally a mail about this piece to Allyn Jacobs.

Perhaps we should mention this is the information that I found: (cWW2)

...the United Bus Service (at that stage on the verge of bankcruptcy) which operated between Alexandra and Johannesburg.....

Yes we were at cross purposes before.

Although Union ties in with the the former Union of South Africa.

I now have a ticket of The "UNION" Motorbus Co. 10 Mill.

...possibly this one is from Egypt?

The above ticket came with this: Motor Bus Service "Inflexible" 10 Mill

The Egyptian Army Barracks at Abbassia (on the outskirts of Cairo) were used as an Australian hospital from August 1915 until 1919.

It is easy to understand mil in Egypt, but the denomination of the token is 6d. Since "Union" is pretty generic, would these not be two different organisations?

Apparently these Union Bus Service are from Stanley Co Durham. I suggest the initials probably denote a colliery.

There are for sale in an upcoming auction by DNW I have saved the images.

I saw that upcoming auction. I plan on bidding. Hopefully they can supply some documentation as to Stanley.

See also the first post of this thread. It looks like the 4d and 6d pieces were used at the same time. A discount ticket, I suppose, but for who or what? Invalids and school children don't work in mines. Maybe the 6d was for longer rides?
