Guayaquil Ecuador Transport Token
« on: August 26, 2020, 05:38:27 PM »
I have the following token, listed in Smith as a transport token of the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador. It was reported in a 1951 issue ot the Fare Box. Specifications are:
22 mm red "plastic" with samll hole at bottom. (The speciment listed in Smith does not have a hole)
O: E. de C.U. de GUAYAQUIL. | 5
R: (arms of Ecuador)

Smith does not give an explanation for the abbreviation E. de C.U. nor could I find a transport company with this name. What does E. deC.U. mean and is this really a transport token?

E. de C.U. de GUAYAQUIL is likely to stand for Elecricidad (or Electrica) de Centro Urbano de Guayaquil.

Urban electrification normally started on a small scale. There are a number of cases in South America where the electricity company owned what was originally horse tram lines and converted them to electric tram service. Usually, the local companies were taken over by a national champion as the local network was connected to a national grid, but the old head offices will often enough still serve as local office for the national company.

The horsecar company Empresa de Carros Urbanos de Guayaquil (Ecuador) was founded 20 November 1883. Red celluloid, 23 millimetres. This was the only known transport token from Ecuador till the very recent Quito Metropolitan issue. -Facebook group Transportation Token Collectors.
The pierced hole would appear to be a mutilation, price revision or invalidation.
Very nice token.

Thank you Kushi for the information. I also read the references you gave, very interesting information. Particularly the Morrison page:

which has nice pictures of the trams in Guayaquil and even one with the name of the Company: Empresa de Carros Urbanos.
