Slovakia 10h 1943.jpg

Slovakia, 10 halierov, 1943.

I can't remember where I found this image.

It is a known unissued piece.

I can't find out the story of why it came to be produced.

Does anybody know?

Here I found a catalog of all Slovakian patterns and trial strikes from the period.

10 korun 1939 is a wonderfully designed one.

That's an excellent find, Natko.  8)

I hadn't realised that so many trials and patterns existed for the war time Slovak state.

Numismatic community in Czechoslovakia was very large and strong before WWII. Today we see numerous auction houses from these two countries selling beautiful rarities, especially from Austrian empire. If only couple of enthusiastic numismatists had any relation to the government in Slovakia at the end of thirties, no wonder they tried to produce as many patterns possible. I'm actually surprised not to see them in wider variety of metals.

Great fun thread. Clear ties with later designs that were used on circulation coins.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Guess that is a somewhat common theme, but I still find it very thoughtful of the Slovak government to not use that design. After all, a similar scene (more abstract though) is now used on the 5 cent coin from that other Slov- country. ;)

Slovakia 1944.jpg

The war-time Slovak state issued a set of stamps in 1944.

It portrayed ancient princes and King Svatopluk.

Prince Pribina is seen at bottom left.

His portrait also appeared on one of the trial pieces up-thread.

In July 1939 a silver 5 korun coin was issued to commemorate Father Andrej Hlinka.

He was a Slovak Catholic priest and politician.

He had been the leader of the Slovak People's Party from 1913 until his death in 1938.

The obverse legend translates as: "FOR THE LIFE OF GOD. FOR A NATION OF FREEDOM".
