Large "786" token , 51mm diameter!
« on: February 06, 2017, 04:12:03 PM »
Copper 51mm / 51,75g / thickness : 2,5mm / reeded edge

I bought it from a french traveller who went to Sikkim many years ago.
Tokens showing a holy muslim formula transcripted as "786" in the abjad code are common in India; they often bear a pseudo date 1616 / 1717 or 1818 which is thought to be good luck numbers. The other face usually shows a mosquee or some other design, sometimes a crude copy of a british India coin and it is admitted that they have been struck in years 1950; cast "copies" are today fabrications...all are of +/- 30 mm diameter.

This one shows as reverse a good copy of the british Bombay Presidency rupee KM224 from Surat mint / frozen ry 46 of Shah Alam II.
The rupee KM224 is 27,8mm diameter and this copper token is 51mm !

Interesting and useful information.

Have you an image of one of the smaller cast copies to add?   ...or of course anyone else?

I join pictures of 2 other tokens of "normal" size (25-35mm ?): one of the same "786" type with on reverse a very crude copy of another british India coin (Bengal presidency?) and the 2nd  is what I think a cast token.
(these 2 coins are not mine, a lot are for sale on eBay)
