UK North Ireland pound Stuart Devlin.jpg

Proposed design by Stuart Devlin.

From 1984 to 1987, the UK issued a series of pound coins that celebrated its four constituent countries. That series was designed by Leslie Durbin. The competition for the series was almost won by Stuart Devlin, but unfortunately neither the judges nor the Northern Irish authorities liked his use of the royal Northern Irish elk.

I do not know which other designs Mr Devlin produced for this series. All the competitors were told to take care with designs for Northern Ireland, since previous designs involving harps or the Red Hand of Ulster had proved unacceptable.

These artists took part in the competition for regional (i.e. national - Scottish, etc.) variants of the pound coin series, 1984-1987.

Leslie Durbin was the winner.
